Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party, August 10 at Ski Beach Park

The “Big Bear Valley Astronomical Society” will be holding their annual summer public Star Party at Ski Beach Park this August 10 during the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

Last year record crowds showed up with their chairs and blankets to spend the evening oohing and aahing at sights they had never seen before, like Saturn and Jupiter from a professional telescope, all the while shooting stars shooting over head.

The Perseid’ meteor shower is an annual event where the earth’s orbit around the sun will return us to the same spot in space a comet had passed through previously leaving behind a trail of debris from the comet tail. In this case it was Comet Swift-Tuttle from a pass made in 1992. Although this meteor shower does not actually peak until the 12th of August, meteor showers happen over a range of dates with the peak the only advertised date. This meteor shower starts 2 weeks before peak and continues until 2 weeks post peak. Peak in this case is about 50 shooting stars an hour.

Come out with your family and friends and join us this August 10 after dark at Ski Beach Park – 41216 Park Ave, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315
